Our base, Tig Áine is situated in the heart of the West Kerry Gaeltacht and sits on the tip of Clochar Head overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. This writer's house, home of Áine and her late husband, Mícheál Ó Dubhshláine, author of 'A Dark Day on the Blaskets' and 'Are You Going Home Now? Memories of Old Kilkea', is bursting with atmosphere and inspiration. It is a rare example of an original 1860s stone-built house with half-loft built on the sea side of the road. Over the years it has been sympathetically extended and renovated in the old style. Grape vines grow in the south west facing greenhouse. There are ample workspaces, nooks and crannies to disappear into, a conservatory, small library, computer workstation and of course, delicious fresh food (it's a popular café and gallery in the summer). It is 3 miles west of Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (Ballyferriter), a mile from Dún Chaoin and 9 ½ miles from Dingle and sits on the magnificent Slea Head route, with stunning views of nearby Clochar strand. From Tig Áine it is less than five minutes walk to the strand, an intimate sandy beach that's a favourite with locals. A nearby cliff path leads to Ceann Sreatha, a rocky headland where the Blasket Islands, the source of some of Ireland's most famous Irish-language writers, can be viewed in all their glory. |
